Middle of the Night Pondering

Oh, happy day!

Middle of the Night Pondering

It’s 4 am, I’ve been unable to sleep for two hours without any cause or understanding. I need the sleep too, but ah well, I’ll never pass up an opportunity to write. I found this excellent quote killing time until my eyelids begin to droop again and I had a strong need to share it:

“Hold yourself responsible for a higher standard than anybody else expects of you. Never excuse yourself. Never pity yourself. Be a hard master to yourself-and be lenient to everybody else.”

– Henry Ward Beecher

I was completely taken back when I read this. Aren’t we supposed to forgive ourselves for everything and nurture our fragile self esteem by making excuses for all our behaviors? We then use this train of thought to blame all those around us and expect better from them then we are willing to do ourselves.

Maybe we all followed this line of thinking we’d have less blame, more personal responsibility and a better society as a whole.

It might be late and I might be overly tired, but this is perfect.
